Does echinacea help prevent or shorten colds?

The evidence is mixed. NCCIH notes that some studies suggest echinacea might slightly lower the chance of catching a cold, but results are inconsistent, and products differ widely in which plant parts and species they use. It can cause allergic reactions in some people. Handwashing, sleep, and recommended vaccines remain the best supported ways to stay well.
